Hither Hills hiking trail in the winter - Montauk, New York in the Hamptons

Let’s Montauk About This

Of the many faces of the Hamptons, Hither Hills State Park is among its best looking ones. Saturday’s weather was gorgeous and we, along with our friends Cameron and Ben, prioritized hiking and tacos over anything else that morning. With the sea framing one side of Old Montauk Highway, Hither Hills stretches across 18 miles on the other side with well-kept campgrounds, hiking trails, dunes, sand, and areas for hunting. The hike through Hither Hills State Park proved to be one of the best things to do in Montauk. We parked at the overlook of the park and picked a trail.

The trail diverged, but with no real destination in mind it didn’t matter which path we took. After a quick break at the railroad tracks, we pressed onward until the path gave way to a serene crescent beach on the north side of the park. The water was still and shone a deeper blue than the sky above it. And the sand was of fine grain but barely noticeable under the blanket of shells, beach glass, driftwood, and tumbled stones that covered the shoreline–an amazing canvas for shooting jewelry.

We could have stayed there all day had tacos not been on our minds all morning. But priorities (especially of the taco variety) only mean that that we can leave enough to be explored for next time.
