A Lesson Learned In Saint Émilion

In the southwestern part of France, there is a town with postcard views that overlooks limestone carved buildings and cobblestone roads for days. Located about 45 minutes out of Bordeaux, this small commune is known as Saint-Émilion. And even if every city in France looked like this, you would still melt at first site.

Saint-Émilion contrasts heavily to Bordeaux’s mini Parisian-esque likeness and you’re immediately hit with the quaint and charming view, a backdrop certainly fit for producing some of the finest grapes that put Bordeaux on the vino map.

Stop here on your way to wine tasting and leave with a few tidbits that could make for perfect conversation starters. In addition to learning about wine futures, they will tell you that the gorgeous church that towers above the town and its surroundings is an amazing piece of architecture having been carved out of solid limestone rock in the 8th century. Also, much of its structure actually exists underground where you’ll find the cathedral, catacombs, preserved mosaics among other pieces of history.

For photo-taking opportunities, be sure to wander down Saint-Émilion’s medieval alleyways or make your way to the top to capture views that overlooks the rest of the village. You’ll realize quickly it’s hard to take a bad picture in a town like this.
