Ahihi-Kinau Lava Flow Reserve is a coastal lava field on the southwest coast of Maui. While it’s known for as a spot for the best snorkeling in Maui and view of the island’s most recent lava flow, it’s also three miles of gorgeous landscapes, textures and colors.
We had a field day exploring exploring Waiala Cove (aka the Cove), Kanahena Bay (aka the Beach), and Moanakala (aka Dumps). These are the only three main areas that are open to visitors and the nice easy drive makes the good views quite accessible.
For those on a mission to find the best snorkeling in Maui, look for Kenahana Cove, which is considered a secret among many frequenters, both local and visiting. The lava (and other sharp objects) make getting in and out of the water quite challenging, so consider wearing water shoes. And get there early when the sealife is more abundant and the cove less crowded – you’ll without a doubt get the kind of snorkeling show you were looking for.
